‘Dhanyamla dhara’ is a panchakarma procedure included under Swedana karma. It is mainly used in musculoskeletal disorders to treat arthritis and inflammatory conditions, particularly Vata disorders associated with Kapha dosha.

Introduction

Dhanyamla dhara means pouring of Amla (fermented) Dhanya (grains) in a streamline flow (dhara) over the body. It can be performed as a localized (sthanik) or full-body (Sarvang) treatment. It is categorized under Drava Sweda (parisheka and avagaha sweda).

Acharya Sushruta and Charaka both described Dhanyamla under Madya Varga (fermented preparations), with Charaka referring to it as Amla Kanjikam.

Preparation of Dhanyamla

According to Sahashra Yoga, the traditional preparation involves a specific blend of ingredients:

  • Tandula (Rice) & Prithaka (Flattened Rice): 6.4kgs each
  • Kuluttha (Horse-gram) & Laja (Fried Rice): 1.6kgs each
  • Kang Bija & Kodrava tandula: 2.56kgs each
  • Sunthi (Ginger) & Ajamoda (Carrom seeds): 1.28kgs each
  • Warm Water: 128 liters

These are sealed in an earthen vessel and heated on a low flame for seven days. Alternatively, an easier seven-day dark-fermentation method is also practiced by some physicians.

Benefits and Indications

  • Vatavyadhi: Used as Avagaha sweda after full-body massage.
  • Inflammation & Fever: Alleviates Daha (burning sensation) and Jwara (fever).
  • Digestive Health: Cures constipation, improves appetite, and acts as a carminative.
  • Oral Health: Used as Gandusha (gargle) to remove foul smell and tastelessness.

The Procedure

1. Purva Karma (Preparation)

Patient sits or lies on the droni. Talam is applied to the head, and a full-body oil massage (Abhyanga) is performed. Ear plugs and eye pads are used for protection.

2. Pradhan Karma (Main Procedure)

Dhanyamla is heated indirectly. Two therapists pour the liquid in a steady stream from about 4 inches height for approximately 45 minutes.

3. Paschat Karma (Post-treatment)

The body is cleaned with a soft towel, and Rashnadi Churna is applied to the head. The patient rests before taking a warm bath.

Discussion & Conclusion

Dhanyamla is a Sandhana Kalpana (fermented formulation) known for its Rooksha (dry), digestive, and anti-inflammatory properties. It is exceptional for treating Amavata (Rheumatoid Arthritis) and Diabetic Neuropathy.

By digesting Ama (toxins) and clearing the Srotas (channels), Dhanyamla dhara facilitates better absorption of nutrients and induces sweating to eliminate metabolic waste, making the body strong and correcting metabolism.
